Auto Insurance Coverage

auto insurance coverage

There are a lot of choices when it comes to Auto Insurance Coverage.

To get the most for your money and be sure you don't end up under-insured, you really need to understand the different types of car insurance coverage available.

You've probably heard the old saying, "Knowledge is power!" In the case of your car insurance coverage, the right knowledge gives you the power to get what you need at a price you can afford.

Although auto insurance cover may seem confusing at first, it doesn't have to be difficult to understand.

You will find that having the knowledge of what the different terms represent will give you confidence when it comes to choosing the types of coverage you need.

You'll also be more comfortable when dealing with your chosen insurance policy provider. You can ask the right questions if and when you speak to an insurance agent and understand their response.

Who Does My Auto Insurance Cover?

Many people don't know the answer to the basic question of who is covered by their car insurance policy, even though they're paying for it! :)

Most auto insurance policies cover:

  • You and your spouse
  • Relatives who live in your house
  • Other licensed drivers who drive your car with your permission

However, there are exceptions to these rules, so if you are in the least amount of doubt, it's best to ask. Let me give you an example.

If you have a teenage son or daughter who has just gotten their driver's license, your insurance may not automatically cover them in the event of an accident. You'll need to have them added to your policy as an approved driver.

Basic Types of Auto Insurance Coverage

There are 6 types of basic car insurance coverage that are considered primary coverage. There are also additional coverage options for special circumstances.

Here's the rundown:

  1. Bodily Injury Liability - covers injury to other people you may harm as a result of an accident.

  2. Property Damage Liability - covers damage you may cause to another person's property.

  3. Personal Injury Protection - covers medical expenses for the driver and passengers in your own car.

  4. Collision Coverage - covers damage to your own vehicle.

  5. Comprehensive Coverage - covers damage or loss you receive as a result of something other than a typical accident, like theft, fire, vandalism, etc.

  6. Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist Coverage - covers you for damages if you are hit by someone who does not have insurance or not enough insurance to cover the damage they've caused.

In addition to those basic types of insurance, you can also get optional auto insurance cover for things like emergency road service, car rental expense, death or dismemberment, gap coverage, or even custom equipment coverage.

Don't assume that you are covered for every contingency. Even if you think you have full coverage auto insurance be sure to clarify with your preferred auto insurance carrier exactly what your policy includes.

As my mom always said, "Read the fine print."
