Australia Auto Insurance

Australia auto insurance

Australia auto insurance is pretty similar that of car insurance coverage in most other countries.  There are differences, of course, but more similarities.

It is required by law to have at least a minimum amount of car insurance Australia coverage.  That's not unusual, as minimum coverage is required in the USA, too, so I was quite used to the concept.

The minimal insurance required is your Compulsory Third Party Insurance. It is also referred to as CTP, Greenslip, and TPI, depending on where you live.

What I found different about buying auto insurance in Australia is that each state requires payment of your Compulsory Third Party insurance along with your vehicle registration. This is to make sure that every vehicle is covered.

I do like this idea (although the rates are really high) because you are much less likely to be hit by someone who has no insurance at all.

Of course, there are always a few who try to drive around in unregistered automobiles, but they usually get caught. I wouldn't suggest you try this. The fines are horrendous!

Of course, this particular insurance only covers injury claims to those who are not at-fault in the accident, so if you want to have additional coverage (and you probably do!), you'll need to set that up separately with an Australian insurance company.

There are three other types of Australian motor vehicle insurance.

  • Third Party Property Damage - for damage to other people's property.
  • Fire, Theft, and Third Party Property/Extra Cover - for damage to other people's property plus damage to your own property in the event of fire or theft.
  • Comprehensive Cover - for damage to the property of both parties.

You must arrange for this coverage privately with an insurer of your choice.

This is where knowing what to look for comes in handy to save you money. You can reduce your costs by taking advantage of the competition, choosing a higher excess, and asking for every possible discount.

You can also save money by purchasing your insurance online. Many insurance companies provide free online quotes. All you have to do is take a few moments to fill out their online forms. This is the easiest way to make comparisons before making your final decision.

I like the convenience and anonymity of dealing with insurance companies in this manner. Some people prefer to talk to someone directly. If that's you, use the online quotes to narrow down your best quotes before ringing to negotiate your policy. It's the next best option.

All the best in finding an Australia auto insurance quote that meets your needs at a good price. And may you never have to file a claim! :-)
