Do you need tourist automobile insurance when you are traveling abroad? Maybe, maybe not!
More and more people are becoming world travelers these days. It's fun and exciting to visit another country and experience their customs, cultures, foods, and unique beautiful features.
If you are planning a trip to another country, it's important to consider whether or not you will be driving a car at any point while you are away. If the answer is possibly yes, you need to think about what you are going to do for your travel car insurance.
Don't just assume that because you have an insurance policy at home that it will automatically cover you for liability if you're in an accident in a foreign country.
It might, but there's an equally good chance that it might not.
You must check and it's easier to do that before you leave than to have to try to contact your insurance company while you are away.
So if you're planning a big trip, start by calling your current auto insurance company and ask them if your policy will cover you in a foreign country. Be sure to be specific.
Tell them which country or countries you are visiting, even if you're an American and only visiting Mexico or Canada.
Are you covered if you are driving someone else's vehicle? What about if you rent a car?
That might be the end of your quest if the answer is a positive one and you're covered. Take down the number you would need to contact in case of an accident abroad and put it somewhere like your wallet so you have it if you need it.
But what if they say no? You still have options! Do you have a credit card? Call them and ask what type of coverage they can offer you if you are renting a car overseas or in another country.
A lot of major credit card companies include liability insurance and insurance for the rental car if you rent the car using your credit card. This can potentially save you big bucks on rental car insurance or travel car insurance that has to be purchased separately.
Finally, if all else fails, you can purchase tourist automobile insurance for short term coverage while you are traveling. This can be organized while you're still at home, or you can often purchase travel car insurance in some countries after you arrive.
I prefer to plan ahead so that you don't end up with nasty surprises that ruin your holiday. It only takes a few minutes to get a tourist car insurance quote, so don't procrastinate and live to regret it.
Enjoy your trip!
