RBC Insurance Canada has become quite a popular choice for Canadian residents, particularly when it comes to their car insurance needs.
RBC auto insurance has been offered to Canadian drivers for decades through the Royal Bank of Canada - hence the name, RBC. ;)
The main offices of RBC Insurance are located in Mississauga, Ontario, but they do have branches throughout Canada, and even around the world as they have expanded their reach with their various personal insurance offerings.
One thing to keep in mind, though, is that not ALL Canadian residents are eligible to access car insurance through RBC. This is something I discovered while doing my own RBC Insurance car insurance research.
The Canadian government runs their own insurance scheme in some locations.
For that reason, if you're a resident of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, or British Columbia, you'll need to check out those government-run auto insurance plans yourself, and perhaps only consider RBC for your other insurance needs.
If you live in the rest of Canada, you can take advantage of the RBC auto insurance coverage options available. A great place to quickly and easily get a free quote is using this Kanetix free quote form.
They'll compare RBC to other insurers you are eligible to use so you can get a really good idea of how they stack up to the competition.
All Canadian drivers are required by law to carry the minimum liability amount set out by their province of residence.
These requirements vary from province to province, so it's a good idea to not only consider what your legal responsibilities are, but also whether or not you should up those coverage limits on your auto policy to insure full protection in worst case scenarios (accidents where you are deemed liable for extremely high costs).
Apart from liability, most drivers want to cover their own losses as well. This is particularly true if you are driving a vehicle that would be costly to repair or replace.
Collision and Comprehensive coverage is ideal for covering damages to your vehicle due to accident, vandalism, theft, acts of nature, etc. If you happen to drive an older vehicle of low value, it may not be worth paying for this additional coverage. This is optional, not required by law.
Something interesting that RBC Insurance Canada offers that many other insurers do not is an auto coverage called Specific Perils Coverage. It's similar to Comprehensive, but you get to choose the specific perils you want your vehicle insured for rather than paying for a blanket cover.
This option can be discussed with an RBC Insurance Canada agent to determine if perhaps this would be the right way to go in your own situation.
If you've already got RBC auto insurance and you find yourself in a situation where you need to file a claim, they offer 24/7 service. This is a plus!
You can ring them on 1-800-769-2526 and someone will help you get your claim started asap.
SPECIAL NOTE: Here's a little perk I discovered during my RBC insurance car insurance research. A lot of people aren't sure if it's a good idea to file a claim when the incident is minor. There's always the worry that making the claim will cause their rates to go up. Is it best to just suffer the smaller loss and avoid reporting it? With RBC, they've set up an "anonymous claims advice" number that you can call and find out what would be best and how filing will affect your policy. That number is 1-866-953-8285. Pretty good, eh?
Of course, when reviewing companies for Auto Insurance Helper, we concentrate specifically on what the company has to offer to drivers in the way of car insurance coverage, claims, customer service, roadside assistance, etc.
Having said that, it's always important, I feel, to note which companies offer more than just car insurance. The Royal Bank of Canada has a pretty wide range of insurance options available to consumers.
Why should you care? The rule of thumb is that if you are taking out different types of insurance, you'll save money by dealing with one company whenever possible.
Yes, this can be seen as keeping all of your eggs in one basket, but if the basket (insurance company) is fairly sound, the savings are well worth the risk.
RBC Canada can provide not only auto insurance, but also health insurance, life insurance, home insurance, travel insurance, mortgage insurance, loan insurance, and more.
See what I mean?
I'm one of those people who isn't a big insurance fan. I follow the letter of the law and carry car insurance because I have to. I only purchase collision and comprehensive insurance if I have a newer car that warrants the additional out-of-pocket expense.
But I'm a rare case! I don't think there are many like me these days, as most people I know spend a lot of money on a lot of different types of insurance.
That's fine if that's your choice, but at least take the precaution of insuring with a company that has a secure foundation, and don't overspend. If you can save money by taking advantage of multi-policy discounts with one company, that's more money in your pocket at the end of the day.
Okay, I'll leave it at that. One last request? If you've dealt with RBC Insurance Canada, take a few minutes and tell us about your experience. We thrive on personal automobile insurance reviews from real customers. You'll help someone else who comes along later by giving them a personal heads-up. :)
