I had my car struck by lightning a few years ago. I assumed it would not be covered. I called my carrier, Geico, and learned that it WAS covered.

I proceeded to get work done on my vehicle and had to have it in the shop (a Ford dealer by the name of Four-Star Ford in Wuakee, IA who is now Stiver's Ford) several times over the course of a year.

I basically didn't get to drive my car for a year because it was always at the shop. The final bill ended up being around $10k and Geico refused to allow the dealer to do any more work on the vehicle even though it still had several issues that were a result of the lightning damage.

The vehicle is only worth about $4k so why they covered it, I don't know but they did and they failed to return my car to me in the state it was in before the lightning.

I canceled my Geico coverage and will never be back. They left me with a half working car with no reason other than "no further work is approved".

Hi Chad,

Thanks for the review. Sorry to hear you had such a crazy experience with Geico.

It's strange that they even offered to pay for the car to be fixed if the damages were going to be more than the actual value. I guess Geico goofed.

Either they didn't have an estimate done first by an insurance claims adjuster, or they didn't do a very good job of it. I can understand that they would not want to continue to pay for more than the car is actually worth, but it stinks that you ended up with such a loss.

It would have been better for everyone if they had just written it off in the first place.

Ah, hindsight! It's a great thing. :-)

i had my car stolen on april 3,2009 it is now august 17,2009 as of yet they have not paid out my car even though i also have gap ins and had nothing to do with the theft (for gods sake it was a basic hyundai accent) i keep getting the run around!!! i am asked to keep submitting items that have already been sent and now have to give sworn testimony to their attorney! this is riduclous through it all i am expected to keep paying payments on my car and to the insurance co even though its obvious i am no longer in possesion of it!!! I will NEVER use geico again and have told everyone i know the experience i am going through!!

That's really disgusting that you are getting treated so badly by Geico. I'm glad that you are spreading the word about your experience.

Which City, State are you dealing with Geico insurance claims?

The ridiculous and unfair way that you are having to deal with both the car payments (that should be paid getting paid off by Geico) is appalling.

Be careful about signing off on your final settlement before finding out how they plan to reimburse you for the payments you have had to make in the meantime. They'll probably try to get out of that.

Geico Car Insurance Company isn't doing itself any favors by acting in such an unscrupulous manner. In times like these where people are doing more to save money and you can easily get free online car insurance quotes, these big companies certainly ought to be doing more to enhance their reputation for good customer service and customer satisfaction or they'll just lose business to their competitors.

If I were you, I'd RUN to a different insurer as soon as this claim is settled. Don't wait until your current policy runs out. That's the clearest way to send a message of dissatisfaction and your greatest consumer power.

I hope you can get this sorted out soon. Hound them daily if necessary.

Let us know when you've finalized the deal and how you made out in the end.

I've always loved the little Geico Gecko commercials, but Geico is getting a bad reputation that even that little guy won't be able to fix if they don't get on the ball in whatever office you are dealing with.

Looking at the comments above... put yourself in the shoes of the insurer... You have a customer that calls in to report a theft. Simple situation right??? Wrong!
I am a licensed insurance agent for all states except Hawaii. The average consumer doesn't realize that EVERY insurance company has specific laws and regulations that have to be followed with every claim, regardless if it is just a crack in your windshield, or lightning, or it falling off a cliff. If the insurance company is given ANY indication that there is not enough information, or someone isn't telling the whole truth, that gives the insurer every right to make sure they are paying out something that someone is legally entitled too. So many people take it personally, but what people don't realize out of any insurers book of business 75% of customers lie, and when you lie to an insurance company for any reason it is insurance fraud. A classic example is when someone has a teenage kid, and get mad when the insurance company adds them, then we get the call "take them off! they don't drive my car". What we really would like to say is we believe you... but its a risk, unfortunately there are billions of people with car insurance, so the only way to rate for risk is to do so by statistics, not on a case by case basis, if there is a youthful driver in the house, they could take the car and crash it, and boom, insurance company is signing over a check and has had no payment, nor indication that kid even lived there. If insurance company trusted everyone and believed everything someone said every time... kiss goodbye to your current insurance rates, cause they would skyrocket because of all the claims payed versus the money taken in for risk. So since we can't do everything on a case by case basis (WE WOULD LOVE TO!) we have to treat everyone the same. Keeping in mind 75% of the people lie, really think long and hard about considering someones bad experience with an insurance company, because it is a possibility that person isn't giving all the details or the whole truth. Bottom line is the consumer signs or agrees to the insurance contract, and the moment something doesn't go their way, the insurance company is the bad buy.
Insurance company's are audited by the state all the time, if they see GEICO or State Farm or anyone is paying a claim without all the required documentation, that insurance company will be fined, or could not be allowed to offer insurance in that given state.

We're happy to have you add your input here. Insurance agents are welcome to share their perspective to the reviews and ratings section, too. :)

If you take the time to look through the automobile insurance ratings here at auto-insurance-helper.com you'll see that the vast majority of the reviews are positive.

This isn't a forum simply for bashing insurance companies, but it's definitely an open forum for consumers to voice their complaints and express their grievances.

Consumers often feel powerless when they are getting the run-around from big businesses. Chad and Melissa both feel that they've been mistreated, and they have the right to express their feelings and let other consumers know about their experience.

I'm sure most thinking individuals will be able to understand that not every Geico agent in every town in America is to blame for Chad and Melissa's poor customer service experiences.

Still, if I put myself in the insurer's shoes as you suggest, I would do my best to deal with each case pro-actively and keep customer satisfaction as high as possible, especially in the current market where it is so easy for consumers to jump ship and find service elsewhere.

Thanks for your input. We always like and encourage healthy discussion.

How can Geico treat people like this?

I think it's an awful system in place that assumes the customer is lying. And those who do lie ruin the system for the rest of us, those of us who pay our bills, pay on time, drive safely, etc.

I was hit by someone else, while i was pregnant, and suffered PSTD as well as a host of other injuries and I've never lied to any insurance company or attorney. Yet, they have treated me like I was the criminal. All I've ever wanted was for my medical bills to be paid for, but they make it nearly impossible: they kept switching who my contact person was, so there was no continuiity of communication, they kept requesting materials I'd already sent them, etc.

They don't care how many hours my husband has lost at work from dealing with the paperwork and the phone calls and the complicated medical records. They don't care the stress they've caused me when all I want is for this to be over with so i can get on with my life and take care of my daughter. They don't care how de-humanizing it is to treat someone this way.
