American Family Insurance Wisconsin was started on October 3, 1927, by a man named Herman Wittwer. He knew that the farmers in Wisconsin drove less than regular drivers, so they did not present as big of a threat.

In 1930, American Family Insurance Madison, Wisconsin started the National Mutual Auto Insurance Company and expanded its sales to non-farmers. Three years later, Farmers Mutual and National Mutual fused and Farmers Mutual opened an office in Minnesota.


In 1935, Farmers Mutual created State Farm Mutual of Madison, WI in order to sell windstorm insurance. By 1938, the company had made over $1 million.


By 1939, American Family Insurance expanded its offices to Missouri. The next year, they had offices in Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota. In 1943, Indiana and Kansas gained offices, as well.


In 1948, State Farm Mutual of Madison became known as Farmers Mutual Insurance Company of Wisconsin.


By 1949, American Family had branched out to Iowa and to Illinois in 1952. By 1957, the company decided to add health and accidental insurance. They then added homeowners and life insurance in 1958.


In 1959, the company got its own computer, the RAMAC 305. In 1961, American Standard started sells. Eventually, this company expanded to larger cities and even changed its name to American Family Mutual Insurance Company in 1963.


By 1966, American Family spread to Colorado. American Family even became the fourth largest mutual auto insurance company in 1981.


In 1985, the company started American Family Brokerage, Inc. American Family opened more offices in Arizona in 1986. By 1992, American Family finished building its national headquarters in Madison, WI. Between 1998 and 2002, business opens in Oregon, Nevada, Idaho, and Utah.


In 2005, AmFam joined in with the Green Bay Packers in raising over $1 million for breast cancer awareness. In 2007, American Family Hospital opened in Madison, Wisconsin. Today, they also have offices in Georgia.


American Family Insurance Wisconsin has over $4.8 billion in policyholder shares and is a popular option for your family's insurance needs.
